The Mud Volcano area in Yellowstone National Park is located along the West Thumb Geyser Basin of the park and is definitely worth a visit. The area has a great deal of wooden boardwalks for guests to walk on and view many easily seen areas.
The first thing you’ll see is bubbling, sticky mud! It’s everywhere and oh so cool and stinky! This is a volcano…that’s right. Yellowstone is a volcano which is why everywhere you go you’ll see things bubbling and smoking and spewing. Mud Volcano doesn’t exactly look like a volcano. It looks more like a mud pit.
Just a short walk up the boardwalk and you’ll get to see Dragon’s Mouth Spring….
It really does look just like a dragon’s liar with spoke constantly coming out.
Just a quick walk around the corner and you’ll get to see this amazing large bubbling, smelly pool of mud and clay. So cool!
The Mud Volcano area is easily accessible, especially for those guests who may have trouble walking. The majority of the mud volcano sites are close to the parking area and on a wooden ramped boardwalk. You can also take a longer hike which is posted along the way if you’d like to see some of the smaller attractions on the hill top. Mud Volcano is completely worth a quick stop on your way to Lamar Valley for bison viewing. Make sure you add it to your trip list.
